Senior Curtis Evanicki (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye) has been the most consistent golfer for Keuka College this year, and he capped his stellar career with a second place finish at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Golf Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
Competing against the best 40 golfers in the conference, Evanicki fired a two-day score of 154 to finish in second place, four shots off the pace set by medalist Matt Plummer (Penn State-Harrisburg), who carded a 150 at the Pennsauken Country Club in Pennsauken, NJ. Evanicki’s consistent play earned him first-team All-NEAC honors.
Thanks to Evanicki’s solid play, Keuka finished sixth out of eight teams with a total team score of 691. Penn State-Harrisburg captured the team title for the second straight year with a team score of 650.
On Monday, Evanicki was named Keuka’s Male Athlete of the Week.
Freshman Alex Palermo (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) finished tied for 20th after his two-day total of 172, which was 32 over par. Palermo had a 92 on Saturday but rebounded nicely with an 80 on Sunday, which tied for the fourth lowest round of the day.
Evanicki shot a six-over par 76 on Saturday, including an even-par 35 on the back nine that saw him birdie the par-4 13th and the par-4 17th holes. Evanicki was all alone in second place after the first day, three shots behind Plummer.
On Sunday, Evanicki posted an eight-over par 78, the second-best round of the day and only one shot behind Plummer on a windy and rainy day at the course. Evanicki had seven pars on the front nine but had four straight bogeys to start the back nine. He closed out the round with back-to-back birdies on the par-4 17th and 18th holes.
Besides Evanicki and Palermo, senior Brian Oberg (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) tied for 25th with a 178, Curtis’ younger brother Justin Evanicki (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye) shot a 187 to tie for 31st and sophomore Libert Caloia (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) tied for 33rd with a 195.
Harrisburg’s team score was 650, followed by host Rutgers-Camden (658), Penn State-Abington (666), SUNY Cobleskill (675), Penn State-Berks (685), Keuka, Cazenovia (747) and Wells College (807).
