Keuka College’s men’s lacrosse team lost its first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game of the 2012 season, but since then the Storm has been perfect, winning its last nine conference contests.

With its latest win, the second-seeded Storm (11-4) successfully defended its NEAC postseason championship with an impressive 17-5 win over No. 4 Medaille College (8-7) Sunday afternoon at Morrisville State University.

Junior Chris Redington (Tully, NY/Tully) matched a career-high with eight points on seven goals and one assist to pace Keuka, which jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one quarter, 9-0 at halftime and 12-0 before the Mavericks got on the scoreboard.

Redington captured the NEAC Tournament MVP honors after scoring nine goals with one assist in two wins as the Storm outscored the competition 33-11 to win its second straight championship. It was his second eight-point outing of the season, and the seven goals were a career-high.

Senior Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) ended his outstanding Keuka career by scoring two goals with five assists, junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored three goals with two assists and freshman James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and sophomore Nick Judge (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) each added two goals for the Storm.

Keuka, which defeated Morrisville State 8-7 in the 2011 title game, was making its third straight NEAC championship game appearance, and it didn’t take long for the Green and Gold to assert their dominance against the Mavericks.

A day after holding Cazenovia scoreless for nearly 40 minutes during a 16-6 NEAC semifinal win, a stout Storm defense clamped down on the Mavericks. Led by sophomore Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and classmate Isaiah Nalls (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), Keuka held Medaille scoreless for the entire first half, and the first 34 minutes and eight seconds of Sunday’s title game.

Redington had a hand in the first four Storm goals, scoring Keuka’s first two goals over a span of 1:38, assisting on the third Keuka goal and adding a man-up tally as part of his three-goal, one-assist first quarter.

Redington added two second-quarter goals while Voigt and fellow freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added scores during a 4-0 second quarter. Crumlish, Voigt and Marcello all scored during the first 3:14 of the third to put Keuka ahead 12-0 as an unselfish Storm squad had assists on eight of its first 12 goals.

Brock Levin, the NEAC Player of the Year, scored the first of his three goals 4:08 into the third quarter to snap the scoring drought for Medaille.

Crumlish added an even-strength goal and Redington scored his second man-up goal of the game to extend Keuka’s lead to 14-2 heading into the fourth. The Storm enjoyed a 34-10 edge in shots over the first three quarters.

Freshman Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made 11 saves for the win.

The Green and Gold, who won their last seven conference games to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament, picked up their second win over Medaille this year. Keuka also beat the Mavericks 13-10 in Buffalo on April 11.

For the second time in a week, the Keuka College men’s lacrosse team used a big scoring run to defeat Cazenovia College, and after Saturday’s win, the Storm is one win away from successfully defending its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason crown.

Freshman James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists and junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added three goals and an assist as the No. 2 Storm (10-4) routed No. 3 Cazenovia (7-8) 16-6 in the semifinals of the NEAC tournament Saturday afternoon at Morrisville State University.

Keuka, which defeated Morrisville 8-7 in the 2011 title game, advances to face No. 4 Medaille College (8-6) at 1 p.m. Sunday in the NEAC title game. Medaille defeated Morrisville State (10-4) 10-9 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

The Green and Gold, which has now made the NEAC title game the last three seasons, defeated Medaille 13-10 in Buffalo on April 11.

Live streaming video will be available from the NEAC title game by clicking here. Registration is required for users to watch the video stream, but it is free to register.

The Storm (10-4) won its last seven conference games to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament, including a 15-4 dismantling of Cazenovia April 28 on Senior Day. In that contest, Voigt scored a career-best five goals and the Storm went on a 5-0 first-half run and a 7-0 second-half run to win.

In the NEAC semis, Cory Tilton staked Caz to a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds in before the Storm attack exploded for 12 unanswered goals to take a 12-1 halftime lead. Voigt knotted the score at 1-all off a feed from freshman Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) one minute after Tilton’s goal, and freshman Steve Ruggles (Corning, NY/Corning) put the Storm on top for good off a feed from Voigt with 12:04 remaining in the first.

Crumlish, senior Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Voigt each tallied goals during a two-minute span midway through the first for a 5-1 Keuka lead, and it remained that way until freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored 1:01 into the second.

Crumlish scored twice with an assist, Voigt had a goal and two assists and junior Chris Redington (Tully, NY/Tully) added two goals during a 7-0 second quarter to put away the Wildcats.

A stout Storm defense clamped down and blanked the Wildcats for nearly 40 minutes until Jevon Pakkala’s goal with 5:03 remaining in the third made the score 13-2 Keuka. Sophomore Mike Donals (Livonia, NY/Livonia) tacked on two fourth-quarter goals to finish off the Keuka scoring.

Freshman Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made 11 saves and classmate Scott Thielman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) added two saves for the Storm, which has not lost to a NEAC foe since a 12-8 loss to Morrisville State on March 31.

Luppino and sophomore Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) each scooped up five ground balls, and Luppino (7-for-9) and Koczent (6-for-8) helped the Storm win 17 of 26 faceoffs.

Momentum is definitely on the side of the Keuka College men’s lacrosse team heading into this weekend’s North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason tournament.

The Storm (9-4, 7-1 NEAC) has won its last seven conference games to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Saturday and Sunday at Morrisville State (11-3, 8-0), the regular season champions.

Keuka, the defending NEAC champions, kicks off it is title defense with a 2 p.m. game against rival Cazenovia College (7-7, 6-2) Saturday afternoon in one NEAC semifinal. Morrisville State and No. 4 Medaille College (7-6, 5-3) meet in the other semifinal, at 11:30 a.m.

The winners of each semifinal will square off at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the NEAC championship game. Keuka defeated Morrisville 8-7 in the 2011 title game.

Included amongst the Storm’s conference wins is an impressive, 15-4 dismantling of Cazenovia College April 28 on Senior Day. The Storm has not dropped a NEAC game since a 12-8 loss to Morrisville State on March 31.

“We told ourselves all week long that our new season starts after the Wells game. We have two games left that we have to win to take home the NEAC title, that’s the main goal,” said senior attacker Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), one of five members of the Storm to earn All-NEAC honors.

“It will be tough facing these guys again in a week, but we know what we need to do to win the game, and if we come to play next week just like we did today, there won’t be a problem.”

Marcello, sophomore Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and sophomore Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) all earned first-team All-NEAC honors while junior Chris Redington (Tully, NY/Tully) earned second-team and freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) earned third-team All-NEAC, the conference announced Wednesday.

Marcello led the Storm in goals (36) and points (49) and his 13 assists were second most on the team during the regular season.

Miller played a key role on defense, starting all 13 games for a Keuka team that allowed only eight goals a game, with seven games allowing five or fewer goals.

Over the last five games, Keuka has allowed only 19 goals, including a 24-0 win over Penn State-Abington on April 21, the first shutout in the program’s 26-year history.

“Our potential is high and we’re looking good heading into NEAC’s,” said senior midfielder Mason Brown (Dundee, NY/Dundee).

“Keuka is always an end of the year team, we just seem to play our best lacrosse at the end of the season. We have momentum; we just have to stay level-headed and not take Cazenovia lightly.”

While it can be difficult to defeat the same squad twice in one week, Redington said the Storm gained plenty from its recent win over Cazenovia, when Keuka snapped a 1-all tie with seven straight goals bridging the first and second quarters to seize control for good. Keuka’s defense did its part, holding the Wildcats scoreless for a span of 23 minutes bridging the first and second quarters.

“That win built up a lot of confidence for us heading into the NEAC tournament,” said Redington, who was second on the Storm in goals (24) and points (33) despite only playing in 9 of a possible 13 games due to injuries

“Assuming we can build off of this win, which I think we can, we feel great heading into the postseason tournament. We have to continue to get better but hopefully if we come out and execute [like we did on Senior Day] we’ll get the same outcome. It would mean a lot to win back-to-back NEAC championships.”

The Keuka College men’s lacrosse team closed out the regular season with seven straight North Eastern Athletic Conference victories to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEAC postseason tournament, and the Storm placed five players on the year-ending All-NEAC squads.

Senior Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), sophomore Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and sophomore Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) all earned first-team All-NEAC honors while junior Chris Redington (Tully, NY/Tully) earned second-team and freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) earned third-team All-NEAC, the conference announced Wednesday.

A total of 36 student-athletes were selected by position by the conference coaches for the first, second and third teams.

Marcello led the Storm (9-4 overall, 7-1 NEAC) in goals (36) and points (49) and his 13 assists were second most on the team during the regular season.

Marcello, an attacker, scored a goal in all 13 of Keuka’s games and had 25 of his 36 goals vs. NEAC foes, including tying a career-high with six goals during a 16-5 win over SUNY Cobleskill on April 7.

Marcello scored the Storm’s first five goals of that contest vs. Cobleskill. His five man-up goals were second on the team and he added 20 ground balls.

Miller played a key role on defense as Keuka earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming postseason tournament. Miller started all 13 games on defense for a Keuka team that allowed only eight goals a game, with seven games allowing five or fewer goals.

Over the last five games, Keuka has allowed only 19 goals, including a 24-0 win over Penn State-Abington on April 21, the first shutout in the program’s 26-year history.

Miller also scooped up 40 ground balls, third-most on the team.

Koczent was Keuka’s best performer at faceoffs, winning 130 of 213 (61 percent) on the year, including going 88 of 129 (68 percent) in conference play. He won 18 of 20 faceoffs during a home win over Hilbert College and was 17 of 22 during a home win over SUNYIT. Koczent also led the Storm in ground balls (61), including 10 during the win over Hilbert.

Redington, an attacker, was second on the Storm in goals (24) and points (33) despite only playing in 9 of a possible 13 games due to injuries. Redington led the Storm in man-up goals with 10, including seven man-up goals over a three-game stretch from March 10-21.

He scored a goal in all nine games in which he played this year, including matching his career-high with six goals during a 19-4 home win over Hilbert College on April 14. Redington scored 12 goals over Keuka’s first three games.

Luppino was third on the Storm in goals (23) and fourth in points (30) to help Keuka win its last seven NEAC contests. Luppino was second on the team in ground balls (54) and his two man-down goals were tied for the most on the team.

Luppino, a midfielder, made an instant impact for Keuka, scoring seven goals in the Storm’s first three games, and he recorded a goal in 12 of Keuka’s 13 games. Luppino scored a season-high five points on three goals and two assists during a 12-8 home loss to Morrisville State on March 31, and had two goals with an assist and a career-best 10 groundballs during a 12-5 win over Wells College April 24.

Keuka faces No. 3 Cazenovia College (7-7, 6-2 NEAC) at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in a NEAC semifinal, with the winner advancing into the championship game against No. 1 Morrisville State (10-3, 7-0 NEAC) and No. 4 Medaille (7-6, 5-3 NEAC).

BOXSCORE

On a special day dedicated to the five seniors on Keuka College’s men’s lacrosse team, freshman James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored a career-high five goals and four different members of the Storm scored two goals as Keuka clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason tournament with a convincing 15-4 win over Cazenovia College Saturday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Senior Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), juniors Chris Redington (Tully, NY/Tully) and Anthony Jones (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) all chipped in with two goals as the Storm (9-4, 7-1 NEAC) picked up its seventh straight conference victory.

With the win, Keuka clinched the No. 2 seed in the NEAC tournament and will face No. 3 Cazenovia (7-7, 6-2 NEAC) in a semifinal contest at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.

The top four teams qualify for the tournament, which runs May 5-6. Morrisville State (10-3, 7-0 NEAC) earned the top seed and will host the competition. The Mustangs will face Medaille College (7-6, 5-3 NEAC) in Saturday’s other semifinal, with the winner advancing into the NEAC title game against the Keuka/Cazenovia winner at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 6.

Against the Wildcats, senior Mason Brown (Dundee, NY/Dundee) scooped up a team-leading six ground balls, Luppino had five ground balls, and junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and freshman Steve Ruggles (Corning, NY/Corning) each had a goal and an assist to pace the Storm.

“All of the seniors had some choice words in the locker room and we just told the rest of the guys that just because they’re not seniors yet, they’ll think of this day when they are seniors. When it’s their last game on their home field, they’ll know what that moment will mean to them,” said Brown, one of five seniors honored by the Green and Gold.

“We all played together as a team today. It was pretty emotional before the game, but I’m glad we came out, controlled the ball and got the win like we did. It means everything, this is a great feeling.”

At halftime, Keuka paid tribute to its Seniors, and to the parents of the players, for all their support to the men’s lacrosse program at Keuka.

On a sunny day with temperatures in the mid 40s, nearly 200 fans came out to support the Storm in its regular-season finale, a fact that wasn’t lost on junior defenseman Scott Welch (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon).

“Our fans are instrumental to what we’re doing here, and it’s great to see them coming down and supporting us,” Welch said. “We had beautiful weather and the fans brought their energy today. We feed off of our fans and they feed off of us, and we came away with a victory.”

Jones staked the Green and Gold to a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal 33 seconds in. T.J. Shaw scored the first of his two goals to even the score at 1-all with 12:07 remaining in the opening quarter, but Luppino, Voigt, Jones and Crumlish all scored in the first as Keuka took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.

“JJ [James Voigt] definitely stepped up big-time, he took advantage of the opportunity he had and it worked out well for us,” Redington said afterwards. “Scoring that early definitely set a really good tone for us, especially after how Anthony came out, went in on cage and scored so early. We ran our offense, played within ourselves and it worked out well. Now, we have to carry this momentum over into practice.”

Crumlish and Voigt added goals less than two minutes apart early in the second to extend the lead to 7-1, and the Storm defense held Cazenovia scoreless for nearly 23 minutes spanning the first and second quarters and took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Redington scored the Storm’s first two goals of the third quarter, including an impressive man-down goal with 1:54 remaining off a feed from senior Ben Ternosky (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette).

That goal started a 7-0 run by the Green and Gold over the game’s final 17 minutes as Keuka blanked Cazenovia in the fourth quarter.

“Our midfielders stepped up today, they slid when they had to and their play on defense was probably the best they’ve played all year,” Ternosky said. “Our physical play definitely set the tone, and when we were called for a flag, our man-down unit just picked up the slack and Cazenovia only had one man-up goal (in six chances).”

Voigt and Marcello scored twice while Ruggles, Luppino and Redington added goals during the spurt.

Freshman Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) stopped 14 shots for the win to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Now the Storm has the difficult task of beating the same team twice in a week, but Marcello, who upped his team-leading goal total to 36 goals, is confident the Green and Gold will be up to the task.

“We told ourselves all week long that our new season starts after the Wells game. We have two games left that we have to win to take home the NEAC title, that’s the main goal,” Marcello said.

“It will be tough facing these guys again in a week, but we know what we need to do to win the game, and if we come to play next week just like we did today, there won’t be a problem.”

With the win, Keuka remains in contention for one of the top three spots in the NEAC. The top four teams qualify for the NEAC postseason tournament, which runs May 5-6. Keuka, currently alone in third place, trails Morrisville State (9-3, 6-0 NEAC) and Cazenovia (7-5, 6-0 NEAC) for the top two spots in the conference.

The Storm defense, led by sophomore Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and junior Dustin Kiellach (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) clamped down and held the Express scoreless over the first 13:03 of the second until Aberle found the back of the net as Keuka took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored and Marcello added back-to-back goals to extend the Storm lead to 9-3, and Keuka breezed to the win. The Storm enjoyed a 53-22 edge in shots, a 48-33 edge in ground balls and forced 24 Wells turnovers.

Earlier in the Week, Redington scored two goals with an assist during Keuka’s 13-10 road win over Medaille College. On Monday, Tully, who was named Keuka’s Male Athlete of the Week, added to his hardware when he was recognized by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) as its Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Redington, an attacker, scored six goals with two assists to tie his career-high for points in a game versus the Hawks. He has scored eight points in a game three times in his Keuka career, but Saturday’s dominant performance was the first eight-point effort for Redington since a six-goal, two-assist effort in a win over Penn State-Abington on April 11, 2010.

Redington scored four first-half goals as the Storm (5-4, 3-1 NEAC) jumped out to a 12-0 lead en route to winning its third straight conference game.

For the year, Redington is second on the Storm in points (27) and goals (20).
