The Keuka College women’s cross country team returns four of its top runners from the 2011 season, and will kick off the 2012 season Saturday morning when the Storm competes in the annual SUNYIT Wildcat Invitational.
Fresh off a fifth-place finish during the 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships, the Storm will look to improve on that performance this year.
Led by senior captains Elizabeth Gorman (Waverly, NY/Waverly) and Stephanie Pontes (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes), head coach Katie Marcella’s team will feature strong leadership as well as talent.
Gorman was Keuka’s top finisher in four of eight meets in 2011, including the NEAC championships at SUNY Cobleskill when she crossed the finish line of the 5K course in 22 minutes, 15.86 seconds, good for 19th place among scoring runners. Over the course of the race season, Gorman trimmed nearly four minutes off her 5K time, with the NEAC championships her fastest effort of the year by a wide margin.
All five Keuka runners placed in the top 40 among scoring runners at NEAC’s. Sophomore Elizabeth Ryan (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) capped her strong finish to the season with a personal-best 5K time of 23:12 at NEAC’s. Gorman, Ryan and Pontes each posted season-best efforts at the conference championships.
Gorman, Pontes and Ryan will be joined on the team by sophomore Courtney Woolever (Vestal, NY/Vestal), junior Samantha Yavorek (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) and freshmen Allison Bonin (Orwell, PA/Northeast Bradford) and Caitlin Jones (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport).
Once again, all of Keuka’s meets are on the road, with races at SUNY Oswego (Sept. 8), Penn State-Abington (Sept. 15) and Cazenovia (Sept. 29) before competing in the CCOC Championships (Oct. 13), the Wells College Invitational (Oct. 20) and NEAC’s at Abington (Oct. 27).
