BOXSCORE

There was a critical moment during Sunday’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division championship when the members of the Keuka College women’s lacrosse team could have hung their heads and given up.

A slashing penalty had forced Keuka into a man-down situation, and the host Morrisville Mustangs capitalized on a man-up goal by Alison Falkenburgh to take a 9-7 lead late in the title game, capping a 3-0 spurt that turned a one-goal Keuka lead into a two-goal deficit.

But as they have all year long, the women fought back and had a 10-9 lead late in regulation on sophomore Taylor Smith’s (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) third goal of the title game.

Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, that was the last lead Keuka would enjoy, as the Mustangs would outlast the Storm 11-10 in three overtimes to advance into the NEAC/NAC championship game, Saturday, May 5.

The two-time defending NEAC/NAC champions from Keuka (11-3) were led by Smith’s three goals and six ground balls and sophomore Maggie Bonafede’s (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) two goals and two assists, but it wasn’t enough to lift Keuka past Morrisville State (13-4), which will face the winner of Castleton and New England College in the NEAC/NAC title game.

Freshman Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) scored two goals with an assist and scooped up four ground balls while classmate Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added two goals and a team-leading six ground balls for Keuka, which on three separate occasions rallied from two-goal deficits versus Morrisville State.

Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), the NAC West Defensive Player of the Year, made 11 saves in the loss.

Keuka fell behind 2-0 early on a pair of goals from Hillary Hartnett, and the Storm was blanked over the first six minutes and 29 seconds until freshman Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored off a feed from Hudson to trim the Mustang lead to 2-1.

Smith knotted the score at 2 on an unassisted goal with 17:40 remaining in the half, but Morrisville State responded with back-to-back goals from Hartnett and Wood to seize a 4-2 edge.

The Mustang defense clamped down and held Keuka scoreless until Hudson’s unassisted goal with only eight seconds remaining in the first half as the Storm entered halftime trailing 4-3.

In the second half, Bonafede and Hudson scored less than two minutes apart to put Keuka up 5-4 before Shelby Wood and Lesa Ward scored 1:11 apart to put Morrisville up 6-5.

Bonafede’s free position goal evened the score and Maguire gave the Green and Gold a 7-6 lead on her unassisted tally halfway through the second before the Mustangs scored three times in a span of 1:21, highlighted by Falkenburgh’s man-up score, to take a 9-7 lead.

Keuka answered as Maguire scored off a nifty feed from Bonafede to make it a one-goal game, and Smith evened the score off a feed from Burt with 4:06 remaining in regulation.

The game remained tied until the final 90 seconds. From the left side of the cage, Bonafede found a cutting Smith for the go-ahead goal with 1:30 remaining before Hartnett (five goals), the Tournament MVP, tied the contest with 59 seconds left.

Though the Storm had chances in the two three-minute, overtime periods, Keuka was unable to find the back of the net and the NAC West title game headed to a sudden death, three-minute OT session. Neither team scored in the first sudden death OT, but Hartnett ended Keuka’s title dreams on a free position goal 1:41 into the third OT.

Beginning with the 2010 season, the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has partnered with the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) in the sports of baseball, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s tennis. The NEAC will compete as associate members of the NAC in women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis.

Heading into Saturday’s pivotal North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division semifinal, Kelly Lickert, the Keuka College women’s lacrosse coach, had a simple message for Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), her talented freshman attacker.

Both Burt and Lickert were disappointed over Burt’s being left off the three-team, 36-person All-NAC West squads, despite ranking among the conference leaders in assists (20) and points (52).

“I told her she needed to step up and prove to everyone who was watching why she deserved to be honored as an All-NAC player, and that it was up to her to prove everyone wrong,” Lickert said.

Burt received the message alright, and thanks to her career game, the Storm (11-2) gets a chance at defending its NEAC/NAC title.

Burt scored a career-high eight goals while sophomore Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added four goals and an assist as Keuka survived a scoring onslaught from Christy Foster, Cazenovia’s talented all-conference midfielder, to defeat the Wildcats 18-15 in overtime.

Keuka advances to face top-seed Morrisville State (12-4) in the NAC West title game at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The winner advances into the NAC/NEAC championship May 5 for a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Live stats will be provided from Sunday’s NAC West title game. To view the stats, visit www.KeukaStorm.com/live-stats. Morrisville State will also offer live streaming video from the game, click here. Registration is required for the streaming video, but it is also free to interested fans.

“Jen was going to the goal at ease today and they couldn’t stop her, but we couldn’t stop Christy either,” Lickert said of Foster’s nine goals, which single-handedly kept Cazenovia (9-8) in the semifinal.

“Jen stepped up huge for us today and she definitely showed that she belonged on the all-conference teams. She is our smartest player and she sees the field so well. She knows when she can attack versus when she should sit back and wait for a feed. She’s the ideal, smart lacrosse player who can take advantage of any situation.”

Freshman Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added three goals, junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) scooped up six ground balls and sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added two goals, two ground balls and helped the Storm win 25 of 37 draw controls in the game, including 9 of 10 in the first half.

After the Storm raced out to a 14-8 lead on Smith’s goal with 10:06 remaining, Foster put on a one-woman highlight show, scoring the next six Wildcat goals to knot the score at 14-all. Foster scored three goals in 42 seconds to start the binge and scored all six goals over a span of 4:40.

Daejah Werntz put Cazenovia up 15-14 with 2:05 to play before Burt knotted the score 18 seconds later on a free position goal, her second of the game.

Playing a pair of three-minute overtime halves, Keuka’s defense blanked the Wildcats over both quarters while sophomore Kay Kostuk (Cortland, NY/Cortland) gave the Green and Gold the lead for good off a fast-break feed from Bonafede with 1:02 remaining in the first OT.

Burt extended the lead to 17-15 just 12 seconds later and added a goal with two seconds left in the first OT to finish off the scoring.

“It was huge for us to get that first goal, that’s when the momentum really shifted back to us again,” Lickert said.

Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), the NAC West Defensive Player of the Year, made nine saves for the win.

Up next for the Storm is a rematch with the Mustangs, who defeated Keuka 13-10 at Keuka on April 22.

“We’re definitely hyped-up after today’s win,” Lickert said afterwards. “Our girls are excited to get back and face Morrisville again, they really want to win the championship and get revenge. We know Morrisville State will give us a run for our money but we just need to keep our heads, know our game plan and be ready to go. We know we have the talent to shut them down and hopefully we can get it done.”

Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) was among the stingiest goalies in the country, and on Thursday, Hogan’s stellar play in net earned her the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Hogan, who also earned first-team All-NAC West, was one of five members of the Storm (10-2, 7-1 NAC) to earn recognition on the All-Conference teams.

Sophomores Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and freshman Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) were all named to the second-team All-NAC West while junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) was named to the third-team All-NAC West.

Hogan completed the regular-season with a 10-2 mark in goal. She has allowed 66 goals in 12 games, and her 6.09 goals-against average ranks third in the country among all Division III goalies. Hogan, who twice earned Defensive Athlete of the Week honors from both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the NAC, stopped 59.3 percent of all shots and made 96 saves for the Storm in 650 minutes.

Hogan had three games with double-digit save totals, including 16 stops during a 16-9 win over Hartwick College on March 27 as the Storm avenged its only loss from the 2011 season. She also made 16 saves during a 10-9 road loss to Utica College and 12 saves during an 11-9 win over Roberts Wesleyan College.

Like Hogan, Bonafede ranks among the national leaders in assists per game at 3.58, which places the attacker fifth among all players in Division III. Bonafede leads Keuka in points (63) and assists (43) while ranking fifth in goals scored (20) while starting every game.

Bonafede scored eight points in a game four times this year, including handing out eight assists during an 18-5 home win over Lancaster Bible College on March 30 and scoring three goals with five assists during wins over SUNY Canton (March 14) and Wells College (20-2). Bonafede also had a seven-assist game during an 18-2 win over the College of St. Elizabeth on April 6.

Smith, a midfielder, leads Keuka in goals scored (37) and her 45 points rank third on the team. A starter in all 12 games, she is one of the Storm’s most effective draw control player, and is third on the team in ground balls (29) while tying for the team lead in caused turnovers (15). Smith scored three or more goals in seven of Keuka’s 12 games, including five goals in wins over Lancaster Bible and Roberts Wesleyan. During Keuka’s 9-0 start to the season, Smith paced the attack by scoring 32 of her 37 goals.

Smith and Bonafede are repeat selections to the All-Conference teams, as Bonafede was named second-team and Smith third-team in 2011.

Maguire, a midfielder, started all 12 games and scored 19 goals with three assists. Maguire leads the team in ground balls (37) while her 12 caused turnovers rank fourth on the squad. Maguire had seven games with two or more goals, including four goals during a 17-3 home win over Wilson College on April 2 and three goals during an 18-2 win over St. Elizabeth on April 6.

Capek earned her second straight third-team all-conference honor after starting all 12 games on defense. Her steady play in the back of the field helped Keuka surrender only 73 goals, including six wins where the Storm allowed five or fewer goals. Capek tied with Smith for the team lead in caused turnovers (15), and she added two goals, one assist and 18 ground balls.

The 36 members of the All-NAC teams are decided by the conference coaches. To view the complete list, click here.

The Storm earned the No. 2 seed in the NAC West Division and will face No. 3 Cazenovia College (9-7, 7-2 NEAC) in a NAC West semifinal contest Saturday afternoon at Morrisville State. Keuka handed Cazenovia an 11-7 setback Friday night at Keuka.

The winner of Keuka/Cazenovia faces the winner of No. 1 seed Morrisville State (11-4, 9-0 NEAC) and No. 4 Medaille (8-7, 7-3 NEAC) in Sunday’s championship game, at 1 p.m. at Morrisville State.

Burt scored two goals in three minutes but every time the Storm scored, the Mustangs had an answer, and Keuka trailed 13-8 before Bonafede’s goal with 7:52 to play. Kostuk scored the Storm’s final goal on a free-position shot with 2:05 to play, but despite blanking Morrisville State over the final 11:26, Keuka suffered its first conference loss of the year.

Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) made nine saves in the loss. Maguire added six groundballs while junior Courtney French (Massena, NY/Massena) added five groundballs for Keuka. French also caused six turnovers while Maguire caused five and Smith and freshman Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) each had four caused turnovers.

Hartnett led the Mustangs with four goals, followed by Shelby Wood and Erin Rundle, who each chipped in three goals.

Freshman Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored three goals with two assists and classmate Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) added three goals and an assist as the Keuka College women’s lacrosse team rebounded from its only loss of the season to defeat rival Cazenovia College 11-7 Friday night at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added two goals and an assist while freshman Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) chipped in with two goals and an assist as the Storm (10-1, 7-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference) moved one step closer to winning the regular-season title in the North Atlantic Conference’s West Division. If Keuka defeats Morrisville State (9-4, 7-0) in Sunday’s 1 p.m. contest, the Storm will clinch the regular-season championship and earn the right to host the upcoming postseason tournament, which runs April 28-29.

“I knew we had it working from the first whistle tonight,” said Burt, who is second on the team in goals (29), assists (19) and points (48).

“After the Utica game [a 10-9 loss], we were all about the first half and playing our best in the first half, and then continuing that momentum into the second. This was a huge win, but we’re all ready and pumped up for the end of the regular season and Morrisville on Sunday.”

A motivated Keuka squad started fast versus the Wildcats (8-7, 6-2 NEAC) and took a 4-0 lead after two goals from Hudson and one goal apiece from Smith and Burt. Cazenovia clawed within 5-2 before Maguire scored on a free position shot and 32 seconds later Burt extended the lead to 7-2 off a pretty feed from Maguire.

The Storm maintained at least a two-goal lead the rest of the way and pulled away for good after sophomore Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Smith each scored in the game’s final minute.

“This team, there’s not one star on offense, we have a lot of players who can score and do some damage,” said Burt, one of six Storm player with 18-plus goals.

“Tonight, players stepped up when we needed them to.”

Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) stopped eight shots for the Storm, the two-time defending NEAC/NAC champions.

After Cazenovia pulled within three, 8-5 on Christy Foster’s third and final goal of the evening, the Storm clamped down on defense and held the Wildcats scoreless for a span of 22 minutes and 24 seconds.

Hogan credited her defense, especially juniors Courtney French (Massena, NY/Massena) and Sam Layton (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) with getting physical and taking away easy looks for Cazenovia.

“It was all about communication, that’s a big part of our defense,” Hogan said. “We have to keep constantly talking, and being able to body up on their scorers was a big thing for us. Our defense stepped up and took it to them and this win gives us a lot of momentum heading into the Morrisville game.”

As the regular season winds down, every contest is critical in the pursuit of a playoff spot, and for the Keuka College women’s lacrosse team, this weekend’s two critical North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games will go a long ways in determining who wins the conference’s regular-season championship.

Fresh off the team’s first loss of the season, a 10-9 setback at Utica College on Wednesday evening that snapped the Storm’s (9-1, 6-0 NEAC) 19-game winning streak, Keuka welcomes two of the conference’s top teams to campus for big showdowns this weekend.

Keuka hosts third-place Cazenovia College (8-6, 6-1 NEAC) in a 7 p.m. game Friday night under the lights at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex before welcoming in first-place Morrisville State (9-4, 7-0 NEAC) for a 1 p.m. clash Sunday afternoon.

If the Storm can win both games against NEAC foes, it will win the NEAC/North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division regular-season championship.

The top five teams from the West Division earn spots in the NAC postseason tournament, which runs April 28-29. The winner of the West playoff faces the winner of the East playoff on May 5, with a berth in the NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament at stake.

Keuka is the reigning NAC West regular season and postseason champion as well as the NEAC/NAC postseason champion.

Against Utica, freshman Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored four goals with two assists and sophomore Kay Kostuk (Cortland, NY/Cortland) added three goals, but it wasn’t enough as Keuka lost for the first time since a 13-12 setback against Hartwick College on March 29, 2011, a span of 385 days.

Keuka took a 2-1 lead early on as sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored off a feed from sophomore Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Kostuk scored off a feed from Burt. But Utica (6-5) responded with four straight goals and held Keuka scoreless for a span of 34 minutes and 32 seconds, including the final 25:22 of the first half.

Before the 2012 season began, much was expected from junior goalie Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), the defensive stalwart whom second-year head coach Kelly Lickert looked to as a leader on a stout defense.

Through the first eight games of the season, Hogan has lived up to and exceeded those lofty expectations, leading a stingy defense that has surrendered only 36 goals for the Storm (8-0, 5-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference).

Hogan, the two-time Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Defensive Player of the Week, currently leads all Division III goalies in save percentage (65.9) and goals-against average (4.25).

The two-time North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division Player of the Week also paces the NAC in wins (8) and goals allowed (29).

In earning both the ECAC and NAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, Hogan continued her red-hot start to the 2012 season by earning four wins as the Keuka College women’s lacrosse team improved to 7-0. Hogan allowed only 13 goals in 212 minutes in goal on the week, making 28 saves while stopping 68.3 percent of all shots. For the week, she finished with a miniscule 3.68 goals-against average.

Hogan stopped four shots during a 17-3 win over Wilson College and held the Phoenix without a goal over the first 27:49. Hogan then made 12 saves, the second-most this season, during an 11-9 road win over Roberts Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon. Hogan and the defense held the Raiders scoreless for a period of 29:31 spanning both halves.
