The Keuka women’s lacrosse suffered its second straight loss to begin its 2010 season as they fell by a score of 10-9 on the road at Marywood University on Sunday. Marywood improves to 6-2 on the season.

The Storm struggled in the opening half for a second consecutive game as they trailed 8-3 at the half. Keuka mounted a comeback in the second half by outscoring Marywood 6-2, but couldn’t take the lead. Four straight goals by the Storm in just over six minutes, put Keuka behind 9-8. Marywood then scored with just 2:04 remaining to regain a two-goal lead. Junior Brandy Shafer’s (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) goal with 33 seconds cut the deficit in half but that would be all of the scoring.

Keuka was out-shot 32-21 but picked up three more ground balls (29-26). Marywood held a 13-8 advantage in draw controls.

Rookie goalie Molly Hogan (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) had a huge game for Keuka, registering 20 saves in goal. Marywood’s goalie finished with 12 saves on the day.

Shafer again led the Storm’s offense, scoring five of the nine goals and assisting on two more. She now has 10 points in two games.

Junior Jennifer Bush (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) added two goals while senior Trista Partridge (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) and junior Laura Dougherty (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) each had a goal and an assist. Junior Courtney Potochniak (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and sophomore Kayla McLaughlin (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) each passed off an assist.

The Storm will next play at Elmira College this Tuesday, March 23 beginning at 4:30 pm.

The women’s lacrosse team proved in 2009 that its not how you begin but how you finish that counts.

After winning just 4-of-10 regular season games, Coach Alena Krug’s team put it all together in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tourney final, defeating Cazenovia College 14-13 to win the first-ever women’s lacrosse NEAC Title.

This year, Keuka will not only have to defend its NEAC title but then play the winner of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) in a single game championship.

Six players earned All-NEAC honors and three of them, the Storm’s top three scorers, return in 2010.

Junior attacker Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) led the Storm in scoring for the second straight season tallying 26 goals and six assists (32 points) in just eight games. She also led the team with two game-winning goals. Shafer was an easy choice for the All-NEAC first team and was also picked as the tourney MVP after tallying five goals in the championship game.

Fellow junior attackers Laura Dougherty (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) also return. Dougherty scored 11 goals and passed off a team-high 13 assists for 24 points. A first team All-NEAC pick, Dougherty also picked up 11 ground balls. Murray, a second team All-NEAC selection, was third on the team in scoring with 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points. She added 22 ground balls and 27 draw controls.

Joining that talented trio on offense will be juniors Jennifer Bush (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and Courtney Potochniak (Endicott, N.Y./Maine Endwell). Bush tallied eight goals, nine assists, 17 points, and 20 ground balls. Potochniak added five goals and five assists for 10 points. Sophomore Kayla McLachlan (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) also returns after netting tow goals as a rookie.

Returning to anchor the defense will be senior Trista Partridge (Bath, N.Y./Haverling). Partridge, who split time between defense and the midfield, was fifth on the team in scoring with 14 goals and three assists for 17 points. Joining her on the defensive side of the field will be junior Mary Nicholas (Geneva, N.Y./DeSales) and sophomore Emma Ninestine (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva).

New to the squad this year will be goalies Sam Layton (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West), Molly Hogan (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), and Shelby Seeley (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia). All three will try and replace NEAC Goalie of the Year Audrey Randall.

Also new to the team is Chelsea DeGroote (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman), Brittany Madigan (Groton, N.Y./Groton), Lauren Schreyack (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), Sarah Capek (Elmira, N.Y./Horseheads), Megan Morehouse (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan), and Courtney French (Massena, N.Y./Massena).

The Storm will begin its season on the road against Alfred University on March 17 and will play its first home game against NEAC foe Wilson College on March 28. The NEAC Championships will be from April 23-25 while the NAC Championship will be played on May 1.

The Keuka women’s lacrosse team saw its chances at a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season championship crushed after suffering a one-goal loss (6-7) to the Wildcats of Cazenovia College on Saturday.

The two teams will now square off for the NEAC Tournament title on May 2nd at Cazenovia College. With the loss Keuka falls to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEAC. Cazenovia improves to 10-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

Keuka started off good, scoring two of the first three goals before allowing Cazenovia to tally four straight goals near the end of the first half. The Wildcats would hold a two-goal (5-3) advantage at the break. Keuka responded by scoring the first three goals of the second half, including the go-ahead goal by sophomore Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) with 12:06 left to play. The score remained 6-5 in favor of Keuka with just under four minutes remaining when Cazenovia’s Erin Clinton tied the game up with a goal. The Wildcats Christy Foster then netted the game-winner for Cazenovia with just 1:08 left to doom the Storm’s hopes of a NEAC title.

The Keuka women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a nice 5-2 halftime lead but were outscored 9-4 in the second half as they fell 11-9 on the road to Marywood University on Thursday, April 17.

The loss evens Keuka’s record out at 3-3 while Marywood improves to 6-7 overall.

After Marywood grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Keuka’s Jenn York (Rochester, N.Y./MCC) tied the game up three minutes later. Marywood would answer with its second goal before the Storm scored four straight goals, two by senior Brenna Leach (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), to finish up the first half with a 5-2 lead.

The two teams both scored in the first five minutes of the second half to give Keuka a 6-3 lead. Marywood would score four of the game’s next five goals to even the score at seven-to-seven with just over 15 minutes remaining. Keuka would reclaim the lead with two straight goals in just over a minute of action. Unfortunately for the Storm that would by the end of its scoring as Marywood finished off the game scoring the final four goals to grab a two-goal win.

For the game, Keuka was out-shot 33-22 while Marywood also gobbled up eight more ground balls (28-20). The two teams tied with 11 draw controls a piece while both going 1-for-6 in free position shot attempts.

Leach led the scoring for Keuka with three goals while sophomores Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) and Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) each had two goals and an assist. York and sophomore Laura Dougherty (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) scored Keuka’s other two goals. Dougherty and classmate Jennifer Bush (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) each passed off an assist.

Keuka will next play an important conference game at Cazenovia College this Saturday, April 18 beginning at noon.
