Bonafede, Burt Lift Women’s Lax to Win

Sophomore Maggie Bonafede scored three goals with five assists in Keuka's 18-1 season-opening win over SUNY Canton Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Maggie Bonafede (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored three goals with five assists and freshman Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added five goals in her first college game as the Keuka College women’s lacrosse team defeated SUNY Canton 18-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored three goals, freshman Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added two goals and an assist and sophomore Kay Kostuk (Cortland, NY/Cortland) added two goals for the Storm (1-0), the two-time defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champions.
Eight different players scored for Keuka, which led 12-0 at halftime and cruised to the win over Canton, which is in its first year playing varsity lacrosse.
Kostuk added a team-leading nine groundballs and went 8-for-12 on faceoffs while Smith collected eight groundballs for the Storm.
Junior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and sophomore Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) combined to limit Canton (0-4) to just one goal on nine shots.
Freshman Devyn Hutcheson scored Canton’s lone goal eight minutes into the second half.
The Storm is off for nearly two weeks before traveling to face Hartwick College in a 6 p.m. game on March 27. Hartwick was the only squad to defeat the Storm in 2011, handing Keuka a 13-12 setback on March 29, 2011.
