Women’s Volleyball Finishes 2-2 at Worthington Classic

Senior Rachael Perry and the Keuka College women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches Saturday to finish 2-2 and in fifth-place at the 5th annual Worthington Classic in Washington, DC.

The Keuka College women’s volleyball team traveled to Washington, D.C. for the 5th annual Gallaudet University Worthington Classic, and facing top-flight competition, the Storm emerged with a 2-2 overall record and a fifth-place finish for the two-day tournament.
Sophomore Paige Golden (Kent, NY/Albion) earned All-Tournament team honors after four solid performances. Golden, an outside hitter, recorded a pair of double-doubles during Saturday, with 16 digs and 14 kills during the sweep of Rowan, and adding a career-high 26 digs and 11 kills in the five-set win over Shenandoah University in the fifth-place match. Golden has now recorded double-figure dig totals in Keuka’s last 14 matches, and in 16 of Keuka’s 17 matches during the 2011 season.
A day after dropping its first two matches of the tournament, Keuka (11-6) rebounded nicely, ousting Rowan (NJ) University by a score of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-14. Golden led the Storm in kills (14) while hitting at a .464 percentage in the win over Rowan. Sophomore setter Jill Nolan (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) added a career-high 37 assists while senior Hannah Doody (Tully, NY/Tully) added 21 digs and freshman Devan Curtis (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) added nine kills and five digs for the Storm.
Senior Rachael Perry (Nichols, NY/Tioga) added seven kills and six digs while junior Brittany Smyder (Avon, NY/Avon) also had seven kills for Keuka.
Against Shenandoah University, Keuka won the first set 25-21, dropped a close second set 25-23, won the third 25-21, fell 25-11 in the fourth before rallying for a 15-11 win in the decisive fifth set.
Smyder had a match-high 13 kills, Golden and Curtis each had 11 kills and sophomore Amie Pizura (Prattsburgh, NY/Hammondsport) added career-highs in assists (32) and digs (15) during the win over Shenandoah.
Keuka lost a pair of straight-set matches on Friday afternoon, falling to Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 25-16, 27-25 and 25-19, and also to Catholic University of America by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-5.
Golden had a match-high 19 digs to go with 4 kills and 2 blocks while Perry added 12 digs and four kills and Smyder finished with 6 kills, 3 digs and 2.5 blocks for the Storm against Virginia Wesleyan. Against Catholic, Golden had 14 digs and a team-high nine kills, Curtis added seven kills and four digs, Perry had nine digs and two kills and Doody added a match-high 19 kills.
The Storm returns to action with a 7 p.m. non-conference clash Tuesday night with Alfred University.
